The first war between AI and human beings is being waged in America. We should take note of its scope and portent.

Humility and an awareness of one’s limitations used to be considered a positive attribute. Other morals, like doing no harm, respecting others, and taking responsibility for your actions, were similarly assumed to be intrinsic to what it meant to be a citizen and good person.

After all of the regulatory forms and submissions and analyses and conversations and certificates and fees, do we really think that the government’s intentions, however good and sincere, would result in better and safer AI?

AI will consume “claptrap” content generated by left-leaning media outlets and spit out more of it, according to Robert Thomson, News Corp CEO and noted generator of right-leaning claptrap.

Embracing generative AI in the classroom is not the same thing as teaching kids to understand it and be critical of its function. It’s a cop-out. 

Belief in the authoritative and restorative powers of technology is a fantasy, and using it as an explanation for what is happening with AI at work, including its impacts on entry-level opportunities, isn’t remotely legitimate.

Using AI to “write” every melody possible and then throwing the copyright into the public domain is a cool stunt.

AIs can produce crap faster and more often and they don’t require healthcare or managerial encouragement.

I’m not overly worried about robots deciding to sell a stock at the same time. Human beings do it all the time. At least AIs might be expected to do it for better reasons, as well as react to such actions more sensibly. 

We can and should strive to ensure that AIs aren’t overly stupid or cruel, but the premise that we can build machines that don’t just operate efficiently but provide answers that please our ever-changing opinions about bias and truth is a fool’s errand.
